Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the typical Assisted Living Resident?
Generally there are three typical types of assisted living residents:

  1. Independent elders who wish to enjoy concierge living, social interactions, and a comfortable lifestyle;
  2. A senior who would be more comfortable with some degree of assistance;
  3. A senior who experiences memory loss (confusion) but is in good physical health. More than half of all seniors moving into an assisted living community come from their own homes.

What is Assisted Living?
Assisted Living is a special combination of housing, supportive services, personal assistance and health maintenance designed to respond to the individual needs of a resident. This assistance is provided by trained staff in such a way as to promote maximum dignity, respect and independence for each resident.

May I have a car?
Absolutely, we keep front parking for residents and guests. We are also glad to valet park or pick up your car, clean it off, warm it up, or cool it down for you as well when you are ready for your trip.

Do you have garages?
No, sorry we do not, but we are happy to valet your car for you at any time.

May I have a pet?
Yes, we understand how important your pets are to you and they are part of your family. We do ask that the pet is small and below 25 pounds and that you are able to care of its needs on your own.

Is there a fixed menu?
Yes and No – we have daily specials for lunch and dinner available but there is always a “menu” of items available to suit your tastes.

Are there specific times for meals?
No. Our kitchens open between 6:30 – 7:00 am and close around 7:00 pm. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are served whenever you would like them. Just order to your preference and we will gladly serve you.

Are Specialty Diets available?
We do not have doctor-ordered diets available. We leave it to the residents' personal independent choices. We are glad to prepare meals specific to each resident's requests.

How are service charges determined?
Each resident will develop an Individual Service Plan (ISP) with the SunnyBrook staff. This plan assures that individual needs are met, and no charges are made for services that are not needed.

When are staff available?
24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year with a full time Manager and Nurse on call 24 Hours a day 7 days a week.

When is the nurse available?
Normally, they are in the office during business hours, Monday through Friday. But frequently you will find them in during off hours and weekends. They are on call to all staff 24 hours a day.

Is Internet Access available?
Most of our communities have wireless access available to all residents and their families and visitors as part of their monthly rent.

May I come and go as I please?
Absolutely, this is your apartment, your home. You may come and go as you please. We do ask that you sign out so we won't worry if we can't find you, but we encourage you to enjoy life.

May my family or friends stay overnight?
Absolutely, this is your apartment and home, visitors are welcome overnight anytime. Please just let us know so we can keep everyone safe.

What are visiting hours?
There are no visiting hours. Visitors are always welcome.

May I stay forever?
We are certified Assisted Living facilities and we must routinely evaluate all residents for transfer criteria. We may need to transfer residents who meet or exceed criteria such as:

  • routinely need personal physical assistance from two staff
  • routinely bed bound
  • are a threat to themselves or others
  • abuse alcohol or drugs
  • use abusive or inappropriate language or behavior
  • suffer from unmanageable Incontinence

What if I need more care?
Individual Service Plans are developed for each resident based on their requests and needs. Staff are available to assist with personal cares, medication management, hygiene and grooming, bathing, memory prompting, transportation, activity assistance/prompting, housekeeping, laundry, frequent checks for safety or wellness, or companion care. We charge our services in 15-minute increments.
